The Challenge

The Carl Perkins Act of 1998 allocates federal funds to states for distribution to local school districts for use in Career and Technical Education (CTE) programs. It is important for districts to properly identify students who are inCTE CTE programs versus students who may be taking a single CTE course.

For reporting purposes, Pasadena ISD each year manually identifies and hand codes each CTE student. This process is labor intensive and subject to human error which directly effects federal funding.

The Solution

Pasadena ISD implemented the SeaClass CTE Coding solution, a web-based solution, in November 2007.

Seawinn developed vendor specific conduits for SQL Server 2008 Integration Services.  This allows Seawinn the ability to cache Student Information System data for use in the processes for coding students; not by course, but by course taking history.

To compliment the state coding process, the SeaClass CTE Coding interface provides users the ability to associate career pathways to students adding credibility to the coding on a per student basis.

The Results

By implementing the SeaClass CTE Coding solution, Pasadena ISD experienced accurate coding of their CTE students, a cost effective savings of CTE staff time, and reporting that resulted in a substantial increase in federal funding.

By having an automated system, vital data is available at the click of a button, providing district staff with up-to-date student information.

The system also provides an accurate count of students by career clusters, which allows the CTE Director to plan for adequate staffing each year. The success for Pasadena ISD through the use of this solution has proven to be great and pushed them to be a leader among their peers.
